Clifford Stanley LAZELL was born in Upminster, Essex [Romford Q4-1886 4a:355] to John and Mary LAZELL (née TABOR) of Upminster.
1891 census...Clifford [4] was in Upminster with his father John [40], farm labourer born Upminster; his mother Mary Ann [40] born Stoke, Suffolk and brothers Charles Edward [16]; John [14] and George [9] and sisters June [13]; Emily [11]; Alice [7] and Agnes [2]. All the children were born in Upminster. 1901 census...Clifford [14] a gardener living at Smokeholes, Upminster, with his parents, and sisters Alice and Agnes. 1911 census...Clifford [24] was manager at the International Stores, Newmarket, boarding with Mary Cutting at 2 Chelsea Terrace, Regents Street, Newmarket. In Q3-1912 he married a Haverhill girl, Nellie SIZER , they had 2 daughters, Gwendoline (1913) and Winifred (1915), both born in Newmarket. The address at probate was Haverhill, so his widow must have returned to Haverhill, however Nellie remarried in 1921 to Eric POWTER of 5 King Edward Road, Newmarket. |

Clifford enlisted in Newmarket. On 27th June Clifford and 2 others were the only members of the 32nd battalion to be killed in a week. The war diary records:- "27th, 28th, 29th - During this period the Battalion remained in the front line system.There is no incident of any note to record.The work of consolidation and improvement of the trenches was proceeded with. Wiring was done There was considerable artillery activity on both side during the period." |
